Earlier AI mostly classified or predicted: is this email spam, will this customer churn. Generative AI creates: write this proposal, design this banner, draft this SQL query. Large language models are the best-known form, but image, voice and video models belong to the same family.

Inside a company, generative AI appears first in marketing and sales content, then in customer support, then in software development, and increasingly in operations through AI agents. The realistic picture is a productivity layer: people still own the outcome, but drafting, summarising, translating and first-pass analysis take minutes instead of hours. The companies that benefit most redesign the workflow rather than just handing employees a chat window.

By 2026 generative AI is multimodal by default: the same assistant reads a PDF, looks at a screenshot, listens to a call and writes the follow-up. The main misconception is that output quality equals correctness. Generative AI produces fluent, plausible content, which is exactly why it needs review, evaluation and guardrails for anything that reaches a customer, a regulator or a contract.

Is generative AI safe to use with confidential business information?
It depends on the plan and the contract. Enterprise and API offerings from the main labs typically do not train on your data and offer data processing agreements. Consumer free tiers may not. Check the terms, use business accounts, and keep personal data out of prompts unless your legal team has approved the setup.
