GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of shaping content so AI engines like ChatGPT and Google AI Mode cite and quote it in their answers.

Definition

GEO, generative engine optimization, is the practice of making a company's content visible inside the answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Claude and Gemini. Where SEO (search engine optimization) aims for a high position in a list of links, GEO aims to be the source the AI engine reads, trusts and cites when it composes its answer. The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues from Princeton and IIT Delhi, published at the KDD 2024 conference.

In a company, GEO means writing content that an AI model can quote verbatim: a one-sentence direct answer at the start of each section, headings phrased as the questions people actually ask, specific numbers with named sources, consistent naming of your company and people, and clear definitions. It also means being present where AI systems gather information, from structured data on your site to mentions on trusted third-party sites. The metric shifts from clicks to citations: how often AI engines mention you when a prospect asks about your category.

The founding GEO paper found that adding statistics, citations and quotations from credible sources improved visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing, the old SEO trick, did not help. The misconception is that GEO replaces SEO. In 2026 they are two views of one discipline: AI engines rely heavily on content that already ranks well and is well-structured. The other misconception is that GEO is a technical hack. It rewards exactly what a knowledgeable human reader wants: clear, specific, verifiable answers.

In practice

This glossary is built on GEO principles: every term opens with a quotable one-sentence definition, headings are the questions people type, and figures come with a source. The goal is that when someone asks an AI assistant what churn or net revenue retention means, the answer can come from here, with the name Xavi Creus attached.

Why it matters

A growing share of your prospects now ask an AI before they ever see a search results page. GEO is how you make sure the answer includes your company, and the content it rewards, clear and evidence-based, is content you should want to publish anyway.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimizes a site to rank high in a list of search results and earn clicks. GEO optimizes content to be read, trusted and cited inside answers generated by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. They share foundations, such as authority and clear structure, but GEO measures citations rather than rankings.
How do you optimize content for ChatGPT and AI search?
Open each section with a direct, quotable answer. Use headings phrased as real questions. Include specific numbers with named sources, expert quotations and clear definitions. Keep entity names consistent, add structured data, and earn mentions on trusted third-party sites. Research shows statistics and citations improve AI visibility far more than keyword density.
